Nansulate® Solar Insulation - for Commerial Use

Commercial Solar Insulation

Nansulate® Thermal Insulation Coatings are Proven to Increase the Efficiency of Solar Panels and Commerical Solar Water Heater Systems

Nansulate® is the next generation of effective, versatile insulation and is particularly well suited for solar energy systems. It is a clear, paintable insulation coating that has been shown to increase the efficiency of solar thermal panels and solar water heater systems. Nansulate® also protects surfaces from corrosion and is resistant to mold and moisture.

Universal Energy Group is utilizing Nansulate® Solar on solar hot water heater and solar panel systems to increase heat retention and efficiency of the units. The Stiebel Eltron systems are certified OG300 and qualify for rebate programs in the states of California and Oregon.

Commercial Water Heating

Commercial enterprises that use a large amount of hot water every day can significantly improve their profit margins by utilizing solar heat. Motels and institutions with large laundries usually have ample roof space for collector installation. The normal daily laundry cycle complements the peak solar collection period.

Multi-family residences and condominiums can use shared solar hot water systems. Solar collector arrays on building rooftops can make hot water that is supplied to each unit’s hot water heater via distribution headers. The reduction in electric usage for the building translates to less load on the grid ties and lower utility costs for occupants.

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 created tax deduction allowances of $0.60/ sq ft for commercial buildings with solar hot water systems and increased the business solar investment tax credit from 10% to 30%. You can find further information about both Federal and State Rebates at DSIRE (Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency).

Why Solar Water Heater Systems are So Important

Solar water heaters typically consume between 50%-70% less energy than a standard gas or electric tank water heater, according to the Solar Rating & Certification Corp. Water heating is the second most energy-intensive activity in the home, just behind HVAC.

How Nansulate® Is Incorporated into a Solar Water Heater System

Nansulate® Solar is used on the water heater tank and piping for insulation and to reduce surface temperature. The coating is also mold and corrosion resistant for added protection of your system. Recommended coverage is 3-5 coats (each coat applied at about 100 microns in thickness)

Nansulate Solar Insulation for Commercial Water Heaters

Nansulate® Solar is coated by brush or paint sprayer on the exterior of commercial water tanks to reduce heat loss and retain the heat longer, thus using less energy for water heating.

Nansuate Solar Insulates and Protects Copper Pipes

Nansulate® Solar insulates and protects copper and other metal pipes to insulate, prevent corrosion, and reduce surface temperature for safety.

Where Else Can Nansulate® Solar Be Applied to Save Energy?

Nansulate® Solar can be incorporated into many other areas of a facility to increase output and decrease heat/energy loss or heat gain.

Steam Lines

Heat Exchangers

LNG Burners

Processing Tanks

Boilers

Nansulate is an effective thin film insulation coating that reduces heat loss/gain and also provides protection from corrosion and moisture.

Nansulate Energy Saving Example One Nansulate® commercial customer reduced their annual energy costs from $3,000,000 to $2,400,000 - a savings of $600,000 per year.

Energy Saving & Heat Reduction Examples

Temperature Difference Data from Bandvulc Tyres on Heat Exchanger Plate

Nansulate was applied to the exterior of a heat exchanger plate. The first coat was applied thinly and left to set for just over 20 days. After this period, the coats were applied more liberally up until the 8th coat. The 8th coat result showed a temperature difference of roughly 30 degrees C before full cure time completed. After full cure a larger temperature difference is expected.

Nansulate reduced surface temperature considerably

Energy Savings Data from Textile Application on Heat Exchanger

Heat Exchanger Insulation

Nansulate® was applied to all heat exchangers of the customer's dyeing machines. After monitoring closely their consumption of LNG (liquified natural gas) for a period of 5 months, it was shown that they experienced an energy savings of more than 20%.

Nansulate Improves Solar Panels

Nansulate increases the efficiency of Solar panel systems

Solar array on house includes combination of evacuated tube panels and flat plate panels. Nansulate® improved the overall performance of the solar panel system by reducing heat transfer from the flat plate panels

Case Study

APPLICATION: Nansulate® Solar was applied to a solar hot water heater tank and piping. Surface temperature of pipes is over 200F. The pipes were coated with 12 coats of Nansulate® Solar to dramatically reduce surface temperature and, therefore, heat loss.

Nansulate® Solar and Nansulate HomeProtect Clear Coat were also used on the interior of the case for flat plate solar panels to increase efficiency and reduce energy loss.

RESULTS: Surface temperature on pipes and tank were reduced from 200F to 80F indicating a dramatic reduction in heat and energy loss.

A recent customer states,
“I will tell you why Nansulate is so important for solar thermal installations. It is not only its great ability to insulate tanks and piping, but its overall ability to work in the new high tech solar thermal installations, where the new flat plate panels are combined with more expensive evacuated tube panels, which saves the customer money by lowering the overall cost of the system, but still boosts wintertime performance.

Evacuated tube panels are 60% to 70% efficient in cloudy winter weather, whereas flat plate panels are only 10% to 20% efficient. Since evacuated tube panels are better insulated and designed to hold their heat with the vacuum, the flat plate panels are detrimental to this process of retaining heat and unfortunately act as reflectors of this heat when it is needed to be retained for maximum heat transfer to take place.

By treating the flat plate panels with Nansulate we have improved the heat retention of the flat plate solar panels which allows the evacuated tube panels to transfer more of the heat they produce in cloudy weather to be utilized by the end user. Furthermore, they still can cool down the system and protect the evacuated tube panels if needed.

During a maximum heat exchange the treated flat plate panel was 169.5 degrees F, which was the same as the evacuated tube panels; the non treated flat plate panel was 123.8 F degrees. At night, after the panels cool down, they are the same temperature. However, it is three to four hours before the treated panel cools down to the same temperature as the untreated panel.

I am getting ready to have the media come to see my house and Nansulate will be one of the many items featured. If I did not have the Nansulate I wouldn’t have been able to heat my house since 1/1/08 till today (11/24/08) without using natural gas or wood pellets. I have included some pictures and your product is in every one of them. Thanks for a great product, patience, and your support.”

Product Details - Nansulate® Solar

Temperature Extremes: From -40F to 400F (-40C to 204C)
Application Temperature Range: 40F to 212F (4C to 100C)

Coverage Rate: One gallon covers approximately 150-175 sq ft of surface area with the recommended minimum three coats of Nansulate® required for thermal protection. Actual coverage rate may vary depending on surface texture.

Thermal conductivity, k, is the intensive property of a material that indicates its ability to conduct heat. The lower the thermal conductivity number, the better the insulator. The low thermal conductivity of Nansulate® and the nanomaterial (Hydro-NM-Oxide - 0.017 W/mK) contained in Nansulate® is what makes it an excellent insulator. Nansulate® coatings when fully cured consist of over 70% by volume of Hydro-NM-Oxide.
