What is Nansulate®

Nansulate® coatings are a patented technology by Industrial Nanotech, Inc. that utilize a nanomaterial with an extremely low thermal conductivity. This material allows the coatings to effectively inhibit heat transfer in a thin layer.

Nansulate® is an advancement to the traditional concept of insulation, providing alternative solutions for sustainability and energy efficiency. A benefit of a thin film insulation is that the material does ot rely on thickness as a function of its insulating abilty, and thus compression does not reduce its effectiveness. What type of temperature reduction or energy savings can you expect?

Nansulate® Crystal is still new so we are currently collecting field studies. You can get an idea of the attic temperature difference and energy savings difference by reviewing case studies of Nansulate® coatings which were applied to the underside of the roof deck and ceilings of homes. Q. Is Nansulate® Crystal rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council.

A: We have requested rating of Nansulate® Crystal by the CRRC (cool roof rating council). Their answer indicated that they do not rate insulating materials, therefore Nansulate® was not able to be rated by the CRRC. From their reply to our request, “The CRRC only rates the radiative properties (solar reflectance and thermal emittance) of the roof surface material.  We do not rate insulative properties or insulating materials, and for the time being, the CRRC is not expecting to expand into this area.”
