Nansulate® Keeps Office Toasty During Winter

We are well into winter season, but there is one office in Istanbul, Turkey which has yet to need their heating turned on. So far they are 74 days into the heating season and counting - without needing to turn on their heat. The office is well coated with Nansulate® around the thermal envelope and it belongs to Turkish distributor, Dr. Vedat Bilgin of Kolorgen Ltd. "I moved our office in May 2009 to another building. The new office is large single room of approx. 90 sq. meters (969 sq.ft.) in size, 10 meters (32.8 ft.) by 9 meters (29.5 ft.), with a 3 meter (9.8 ft.) height. The front side is all large single glaze glass panels from bottom to the top, about 10 meters (32.8 ft.) (length) by 2.8 meters (9.1 ft.)(height) framed in aluminum.
As soon as I moved in, I coated all the walls, ceiling and the glass front with Nansulate®.

The floor is granite tiles (uncoated yet, will do so soon).
In summer, in the hottest day (over 40ºC (104ºF)), the room temperature was no more than 26-28ºC (79-82ºF), there is no air conditioning, and I do not intend to use one, as I gave away all the AC units we used previously. All of the visitors commented on how cool it was inside during the summer, but I knew the real experiment would be in winter...

Now the winter is coming and Istanbul is getting colder, all the houses have the central heating systems working since mid-October. So far I have not needed any heat in the office, although there are no curtains for the windows and no carpets on the floor. Not much furniture either which may act as a heat sink. So I decided to keep track of inside and outside temperatures.

sm_instalbuloffice2.jpgI had three digital thermometers in 3 locations inside the room, one of these is 15 cm (6") near the glass window. Daytime temperatures outside are not very low, and I could only measure the inside temperature during daytime. I thought, maybe the office was getting cold at night, and maybe I was missing that part of the story. So I installed two temperature dataloggers as well, again one next to the window. The inside temperatures seem to fluctuate a little,
but inside temperatures are on average 16-18ºC (61-64ºF).

No condensation was seen anywhere; not on the walls, neither on the glass windows, nor on their aluminum frame. The only heat source is the kettle which I use to make a few cups of coffee a day. Well there is another little heat source; my notebook. That's all.

With only a pullover, I feel comfortable inside. The temperature inside varies between 17-20ºC (63-68ºF) (you can see the graphs enclosed). The floor feels a little cold (because it is highly conductive and not yet coated), but not unbearable with shoes on. I really wonder what month of the year I will feel necessary to have some heat in the office. Maybe while it is freezing outside, the inside will be around 15ºC (59ºF).

Enclosed (download PDF here) are the average temperatures for Istanbul. The average temperatures are 9-15ºC (48-59ºF); lower temperatures usually occurring in the evenings and at night. December temperatures are only 4 degrees lower than November averages; 5-11ºC (41-52ºF). A basic calculation shows that even in December, the inside temperature of the office will not be less than 15ºC (59ºF).

Having a scientific background, I do a lot of empirical calculations, now and then, and so I feel that the lowest temperature without any heat would be about 10-15ºC (50-59ºF), even if it is -5ºC (23ºF) outside. I will continue to keep track of temperatures both inside and outside till March/April next year, and also any heat input that will be used. I will report exactly what happened then.

When I leave the office at about 8 o'clock in the evening, I feel the need to heat the car as it is quite cold inside. My wife has the same model, same color car, but she has not used the car heating yet............why?! ....It is coated with Nansulate® all over the metal enclosure (car body). My car is not coated, but this was another experiment I did some time ago, and I needed my car uncoated as a control.

sm_instalbuloffice3.jpgThis office is definitely a nice showroom and showcase for Nansulate®. Where I live, the site management started the central heating system in mid-October. So far, I gained more than 74 days in terms of heating days, which means savings on its own. I have done a lot of industrial applications with Nansulate®, but even so, I was not expecting this much
performance in an office application from only a 3-coat thickness (approximately 7 mils DFT) of Nansulate®. Some of the testimonials keep reporting 20-40% savings, but to me it is much more than these.

This product is a real gift to humanity. You can use it anywhere; from beehives to greenhouses, from fridges to cars, there are so many applications where something is heated and tried to keep hot, or something is cooled and tried to keep cool. All these processes involve energy, and Nansulate® provides a serious barrier to energy losses in all these applications. Less energy means less carbon emissions, less pollution, better environment and many more healthy bees.

The wonderful world of science is full of wonders indeed! If this is not a revolution, what is?
Today the outside temperature is only 2ºC. The lowest inside is 14.5ºC (58ºF).

The graphs are included in the spreadsheet. The other data comes from two dataloggers; one placed in the middle of the room, and the other 10 cm (4") away from the window. They keep track of temperatures at hourly intervals. The datalogger near the window was removed two weeks for measurements at another place where Nansulate is action. So the last week's results are from only one datalogger. I got the official outside air temperature measurements from the website http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/LTBA/2010/1/1/DailyHistory.html, which lists ½ hourly weather measurements.

The results are truly amazing. This place is used only in the daytime, I would expect that nighttime temperatures inside would be lower, but they are not. If this place was used as a home, the inside air temperatures would be 3-3.5ºC  higher due to heat coming from electrical appliances, lighting, cooking etc., which would mean that absolutely no heat would be necessary for this house.

Another striking point is that we have a few sunny days in this period; before the walls have a chance to lose heat, the sun rays coming through the windows heats the place a little, and the office regains the few degrees it has lost in cloudy and rainy days. When I look at the data for the outside and inside air temperatures, I can see that even when it was 0ºC (32ºF) outside, and snowing, the inside air temperature was 14.5ºC(58ºF). A magic difference!"
