A Texas location of a well-known hotel chain found a way to reduce their monthly heating and cooling costs by approximately 30% each month. Window Insulation

Nansulate® Translucent PT was applied at a 3-coat coverage to decrease the heat transfer. Even before the coating was fully cured, measurements showed a reduction of wall surface temperature from 39.9C (103.8F) to 24.8C (76.6F)! Further reduction is expected after the coating is completed cured.

On January 21 and 22, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) held a conference in New Delhi discussing "Industrial Waste Heat Recovery".

According to FICCI, "studies have shown that as much as 20 to 50% of industrial energy consumption is ultimately discharged as waste heat. Waste heat losses arise both from equipment inefficiencies and from thermodynamic limitations on equipment and processes."

The conference was held to learn about new technologies and best practices for effective waste heat recovery, identify potential energy loss areas, and more.

Like lead and asbestos, mercury is another toxic substance that can appear in older homes. Mercury is often found in old light switches, thermostats and thermometers. While the skin cannot absorb metallic mercury, the spilled substance can vaporize into odorless, colorless gas that is breathed into the body.

Immediate cleanup of spilled mercury is a must, especially around stove burners where the mercury can vaporize quickly. If it is not cleaned up quickly, mercury can become absorbed into the carpet, furniture, walls, floors and other areas of the home. If it gets into the ventilation system, it can spread throughout the house.

Exposure to mercury vapors can cause a number of serious health problems. The dangers of mercury are similar to those of lead poisoning: developmental problems, neurological disorders and kidney failure. Mercury exposure can also cause digestive problems and eye diseases.

Lead is another dangerous substance found in older homes during renovation projects. Renovators may encounter lead in interior or exterior paint, around windows and doors, inside old water pipes and other locations. Simple steps like addressing water damage and preventing paint deterioration can go a long way toward reducing lead exposure in the home. Wiping paint chips and dust with wet rags can keep lead particles from escaping into the air.

Historically, lead paint chips and dust caused lead poisoning in children who chewed on the chips or inhaled the dust. In recent years, government standards have ensured that the lead content in paint, pipe solder and other materials is greatly reduced. Home renovators are still vulnerable to lead exposure when they work around sanded or stripped paint chips and dust, or when they encounter corroded water pipes.

Children younger than six years of age are the most susceptible to lead poisoning. Pregnant women have a higher risk than other adults. Lead toxicity is linked to brain damage, nervous system disorders, learning disabilities, kidney problems, reproductive disorders, premature births and birth defects.
